Arsenal get biggest Alexander Isak transfer hint yet as Newcastle reality clear after 'talks' held
Latest Arsenal transfer news with the future of Alexander Isak potentially taking a huge twist after Newcastle's decision
Arsenal's slim hopes of signing Alexander Isak look to have been reinvigorated following Newcastle's latest transfer decision. The Gunners have been linked to the Sweden international over the last six months but a deal always appeared complicated given the finances needed despite the Magpies' concerns over profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
An exact asking price for Isak was unclear, although a triple-figure fee would have likely been needed for Newcastle to allow his departure. Ahead of the summer transfer window opening, PaperTalk reported that Arsenal were unlikely to push for any marquee deals similar to the one for Declan Rice last summer.
As such, signing Isak appeared even more unlikely, although Newcastle could be about to bring in a new striker which could change matters significantly. According to The Telegraph, Eddie Howe's side are pushing to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton with just one year remaining on his current deal at Goodison Park.
Agreeing a fee and Newcastle's need to sell are two remaining stumbling blocks but Arsenal could help with both. Entering negotiations for Isak would give the Magpies more than enough funds to sign Calvert-Lewin and also solve their problem over who to sell.
Of course, just because Newcastle are in talks to sign another striker, that does not necessarily mean Arsenal's Isak pursuit is back on. Callum Wilson is expected to depart with the addition of Calvert-Lewin likely done to supplement Isak.
However, it is unlikely he will be overly pleased by becoming a squad player with Isak as the obvious first-choice striker. With exactly that in mind, there is still some hope that Isak can become an Arsenal player despite the major financial requirements it would take to sign him.
Alternatively, Viktor Gyokeres is a name that appears to be back on the agenda at Arsenal, though Benjamin Sesko's decision to sign a new contract has placed focus elsewhere. Strengthening in midfield has and remains the priority for Arteta and Edu, PaperTalk understands.
Adding depth in the wide areas now also appears to be an aim with Athletic Club star Nico Williams being linked to the Gunners after impressive performances at Euro 2024 for Spain.
