Arsenal can finally sign ideal Viktor Gyokeres transfer alternative with £20m discount

The Gunners will be looking to sign a striker when the summer transfer window opens

Fortune may favour Arsenal when it comes to signing a striker in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners have been in the market for more forward options since last summer, having only brought in Raheem Sterling on loan on deadline day last summer to bolster their attacking options.

With Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus both suffering season-ending injuries in the second half of the 2024/25 campaign, much was made of Arsenal's failure to add another striker in the January transfer window.

Manager Mikel Arteta admitted he wanted to bring someone in, while players like Declan Rice and captain Martin Odegaard were also outspoken on the subject.

Arsenal's title challenge faltered, with the Gunners eventually ending the season ten points adrift of champions Liverpool in second place.

Attention now turns to the summer window, with Arsenal linked with a number of big-name strikers, including Benjamin Sesko, Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres.

But they may actually be able to complete a deal this summer for a player they wanted to sign in January, at a price they wanted to shell out back then too.

Arsenal made a bid of £40million to sign Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa in the January transfer window. Villa rejected the offer, however, demanding £60million.

Papertalk  understands Arsenal did not see £60million as good value for money for the striker. Watkins is 29-years-old and considering he would be a short to medium term option for the north London club, the finances did not add up for Arteta's side.

Watkins has two years left on his Villa contract and will still command a big fee, but Arsenal may finally get the £20million discount they wanted back in January, for two big reasons.

Villa missed out on qualifying for the UEFA Champions League on the final day of the season on Sunday, losing 2-0 to Manchester United. They finished sixth and as a result will play in the Europa League instead.
