Eagles hoping to seal their first-ever major trophy against seven-time winners at Wembley

Prize on offer: Manchester City are seven-time winners of the FA Cup, while Crystal Palace have never lifted a major trophy

Crystal Palace vs Manchester City LIVE!

The FA Cup final takes centre stage at Wembley Stadium this afternoon. Crystal Palace return to English football’s showpiece fixture for the third time, determined to finally seal the first major trophy in their history having twice come unstuck against Manchester United, the last time after extra time in 2016. Oliver Glasner’s side are in confident mood after ruthlessly dispatching Aston Villa in April’s semi-final and brushing aside Tottenham last weekend.

But few teams are as well-versed as seven-time winners Man City in FA Cup success over recent years, with Pep Guardiola’s side hunting the 19th piece of silverware of his nine-year reign as they contest a third consecutive final in world football’s oldest competition, eager to banish memories of defeat by United a year ago. With only the Community Shield to their name so far this term, City will be desperate to ensure a hugely difficult campaign still features a major trophy.

Palace boss Oliver Glasner has been handed a major boost with Adam Wharton’s timely return to fitness, while question marks remain over when Rodri will play again for City. Follow the FA Cup final live below!

Team news up next!

The FA Cup final lineups will be released shortly.

Crystal Palace vs Man City previous meetings

The head-to-head does not read well for Oliver Glasner. His side are winless in two against City this year.

The Eagles fell to a 5-2 defeat after storming to an early lead at the Etihad in April, and drew 2-2 at Selhurst Park in December as Rico Lewis was shown a late red card.

Can he down City for the first time this season today?

Ruben Dias on the FA Cup final

Ruben Dias is in line for a start today as he chases a second career FA Cup title. He is in the market for redemption as City face a rare trophyless season with a loss.

“It’s a massive [chance], even more after the season we’ve had, to be in this final stage and have the opportunity to lift the trophy. We know how good it feels to win the FA Cup and we know what it means to everyone, so it’s a big one for us.

“It’s a competition that means a lot to us. We’ve been defined by the Premier Leagues but I feel we’ve been defined by all of it: all the things we’ve got our hands on, for the way we played.”

Pep Guardiola is already looking ahead to the Premier League

After the FA Cup final, City will have just two days to prepare for a crunch Premier League tie against Bournemouth. It is a six-pointer in the race to qualify for Europe.

Pep Guardiola feels his squad will not have enough time to rest and recover ahead of that tie: “We have been fighting against these situations for nine years, every single season and nothing goes.

“We are going to play Tuesday night against one of the most intense and physical and direct and powerful teams in the Premier League – Bournemouth, who are playing for the Europa League or Conference qualification. It will be tough.”

Palace's route to the final

Palace have not had an easy route to the final - they’ve been made to face two Premier League sides on the way and were involved in two London derbies.

Their 3-0 win over Aston Villa last time out is already being touted as one of the most memorable days in the club’s recent history, so too is the 3-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage the round prior.

Before that, they beat Stockport, Doncaster, and Millwall.

They are now just 90 minutes from glory.

Wembley is ready for another final

Glasner: It means more for Palace

City have been here and done it. They have won the FA Cup seven times. Palace, though, are yet to win the FA Cup, and for Glasner, that makes today far more special.

He said: “If something is the first time in your life then maybe it means more to you than when you have it every single year. City, I don’t know how many trophies they’ve won and finals they have played in under Pep.

“I don’t expect that they will wave us the white flag and say: ‘Okay, it’s the first title for Crystal Palace, you should get it.’ I think they will fight to win it.”
