Ex-FIFA referee slams Michael Oliver over key decision in Liverpool’s win
Liverpool’s narrow 1-0 victory over Burnley has sparked debate after former FIFA referee Keith Hackett took aim at Michael Oliver’s officiating of a major incident.
Burnley midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu was shown only a yellow card for a reckless first-half challenge, before eventually being sent off after collecting a second booking.
Speaking to Football Insider, Hackett was clear in his criticism:
“That challenge endangered the opponent and met the criteria for serious foul play. The referee should have shown a straight red.”
Oliver’s decision to let Ugochukwu remain on the pitch until his later dismissal has been widely questioned, especially as Alexis Mac Allister’s ankle visibly twisted under the force of the initial tackle. The Argentine was substituted at half-time, with Arne Slot later providing an update on his condition.
For Slot, the issue of refereeing consistency looms large as Liverpool look to defend their Premier League crown. Questionable calls have already marred several of the Reds’ games, with Hackett frequently outspoken about leniency shown towards opponents.
As Liverpool await news on Mac Allister’s fitness, Oliver and VAR official Paul Tierney are once again expected to avoid consequences for their decisions.
