Premier League announce TV decision for Arsenal vs Man City following fiery Emirates encounter
The Premier League have reportedly chosen Arsenal’s upcoming clash with Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium to be part of their ongoing Ref Cam trial, following a tense meeting between the two sides last season.
When Arsenal host City later this month, the match will feature the continued testing of Ref Cam — a joint initiative between the Premier League and PGMOL this season. Under the trial, officials wear a body-mounted camera, earpiece, and microphone, allowing broadcasters to show unique replay footage from the referee’s perspective.
According to the Daily Mail, the fixture on Sunday, 21 September (kick-off 4.30pm) has been selected for the experiment.
The last time the two clubs met at the Etihad, tempers flared when City accused Arsenal of employing time-wasting “dark arts” to protect a 2-1 lead with 10 men, only for Pep Guardiola’s side to equalise deep into stoppage time in a 2-2 draw.
While Ref Cam won’t provide live in-game feeds, viewers will see replay clips of key moments from the referee’s point of view. The match official for the game is yet to be confirmed and will be announced closer to the date.
This technology has already been tested — most notably when Jarred Gillett wore a bodycam in Crystal Palace’s game against Manchester United in May, with the Premier League releasing footage afterwards. It was also used during the Premier League Summer Series in the USA, and more recently during Sky Sports’ broadcast of Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Newcastle, which included Simon Hooper’s angle of Ryan Gravenberch’s opener.
