You have to get the stats right': John Terry fires back at Virgil van Dijk comparison debate
Chelsea great John Terry has weighed in on the renewed argument over the Premier League’s greatest centre-back, pushing back against suggestions that Virgil van Dijk should be considered the best the league has produced.
The discussion flared up on talkSPORT when former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant claimed Van Dijk eclipses Terry, Rio Ferdinand, and Nemanja Vidic—a take that surprised co-host Jamie O'Hara and quickly spread online.
Reacting to a TikTok clip of the debate, Terry said opinions are welcome but stressed that facts matter. He pointed out his record as the Premier League’s top-scoring defender, his tally of clean sheets, and noted he has won more trophies than Van Dijk. Terry also highlighted his 2014/15 season, when—at 34—he played every minute for Chelsea under José Mourinho, helping the club secure the title.
Terry concluded that while he enjoys being part of the conversation and is proud of his achievements in the Premier League, the final judgment is for fans to decide.
