Isak trains but midfielder missing: Liverpool’s latest session before Atletico Madrid tie

Liverpool look set to have almost their entire squad available for Wednesday night’s Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid.

The Reds completed their final preparations at the AXA Training Centre earlier today ahead of hosting Diego Simeone’s side, who travel without Julian Alvarez and Thiago Almada.

Arne Slot has close to a clean bill of health for the clash, with only one notable absentee from Tuesday’s session in Kirkby.

Who took part in training?

Footage released on Liverpool’s official YouTube channel showed record signing Alexander Isak involved. The £125m striker sat out the weekend win over Burnley as Slot deemed him not quite ready for action at Turf Moor.

Alexis Mac Allister also trained, showing no lingering issues from Lesley Ugochukwu’s reckless challenge on Sunday, while Federico Chiesa joined the group despite being ineligible for the Champions League squad.

Youngsters Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni and Jayden Danns were present too, with Nyoni and Danns eligible for inclusion on UEFA’s ‘List B’.

The only player missing was Curtis Jones, who is still recovering from the injury sustained in the Arsenal victory at the end of August.

Positive signs for Slot

Barring Jones’ absence, Slot has an almost full squad to choose from. With team news due 75 minutes before kick-off, much attention will be on whether Isak makes the starting XI or is eased back from the bench, though Hugo Ekitike could well keep his place.

Mac Allister’s involvement is encouraging after Sunday’s scare, and the extended bench allowance could see Nyoni and Danns included in the squad.

Overall, Slot finds himself with plenty of options as Liverpool chase a fifth consecutive win in all competitions – exactly the scenario any head coach would want before a big European night at Anfield.
