Liverpool XI vs Atletico Madrid: Predicted lineup, latest injury updates and team news for Champions League opener

Debut watch: Alexander Isak could make first Liverpool appearance in Anfield clash
Spotlight on: Florian Wirtz

Liverpool begin their Champions League journey tonight with a home tie against Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s men are flying domestically, having won all four of their opening Premier League fixtures, and will be aiming to improve on last season’s continental campaign that ended in a last-16 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

This will be Liverpool’s first meeting with Atletico since 2021, when they beat the Spanish side twice in the group stage – 2-0 at Anfield and 3-2 in Madrid – with Atleti reduced to 10 men on both occasions.

All eyes are now on Alexander Isak, Liverpool’s £125m summer signing from Newcastle, who could be handed his debut. The Swedish striker was left out of the win over Burnley as Slot stressed caution after his limited pre-season, but he has trained with the squad and is available for selection.

Fellow new recruits Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike may also feature in Europe for the first time in Liverpool colours, while Jeremie Frimpong is in contention after returning from injury at the weekend.

Alexis Mac Allister trained on Tuesday and could be involved, though doubts linger over Curtis Jones, who missed the Burnley game with a knock and was absent from training.

Predicted Liverpool lineup (4-2-3-1):
Alisson; Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Wirtz; Salah, Ekitike, Gakpo

Doubt: Jones

Kick-off: 8pm BST, Wednesday September 17, 2025
Venue: Anfield, Liverpool
